Suite: Judy Blue Eyes & Other Short Stories

One year ago, the three of us were driving though New Hampshire on the road with the Indigo Girls. We were listening to a lot of Crosby, Stills, and Nash at the time, and decided to record a version of us doing “Helplessly Hoping” when we got to the hotel later that night. It somehow came out great (we used three iPhones in the hotel bathroom - recording studios should look into that cheap ceramic Holiday Inn Express bathroom tile), so we decided to keep posting a new cover every month. Twelve months, one New York Times article, one pretty cool new fan, and thousands of new subscribers later, we’d safely say that this #covertuesday series has been a success. From Stevie Wonder to Tame Impala, Pharrell Williams to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, we found a way to be with you all every month and show you some of the artists that inspire us. In case you need a refresher, here’s a list of all the songs we’ve done so far.

July: Helplessly Hoping- Crosby, Stills, and Nash
August: Homeless- Ladysmith Black Mambazo
September: Queen of California- John Mayer
October: Still Crazy After All These Years- Paul Simon
November: If I Could Change Your Mind- Haim
December: Pusher Love Girl- Justin Timberlake
January: Human Nature- Michael Jackson
February: Super Rich Kids- Frank Ocean
March: All in Love is Fair- Stevie Wonder
April: Gust of Wind- Pharrell Williams
May: It Feels Like We Only Go Backwards- Tame Impala
June: She’s Always in My Hair- Prince

And for your ears, we’ve also made a SoundCloud playlist with all of these songs.

Unfortunately, Prince and his army of Minnesotans dressed in magical purple cloaks riding roller skates eating pancakes with maple syrup and jam had our video of “She’s Always In My Hair” removed. But other than that, everything should be there.

This list is kinda all over the place- and we like that. We wanted to show you the breadth of our influences, and keep you all on your toes for what was to come. For the finale though, we thought it’d be fitting to bring this thing full circle and finish how we started (sorry to sort of quote ourselves) and go with some CSN. Because at the end of the day, we’re a vocal band that considers its “lead singer” our three-part harmony, and no band has done that better than Crosby, Stills, and Nash. So here’s our try at their masterpiece, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.

A quick note about the filming of this video- we’ve recorded all of our videos with little to no budget, using the help of friends and their equipment. As a result, most of our videos have been simply shot, with the focus being on our performance. With this one, we thought we’d aim a little higher and make the production more elaborate, though we still had a very small budget. We asked a lot of people to volunteer their time to accomplish this video, and the response we got was…overwhelming. You’ll see.

Ironically, in the midst of all of these covers, we’ve been writing a boatload of new songs. Like, a lot. Come see us play them. We’ll give you a few chances.

    • The Scoop: Unfortunately, the G8 (is it G7 now?) summit won’t be happening while we’re there, but you should still come. It’s gonna get fancy!
Ok team. That’s all for now. We’ll just finish by saying that one of the main reasons we did this #covertuesday series was so that we could find a way to connect with you all every month. That has always been at the forefront of our agenda as a band…connecting with you all. And this series ending doesn’t change that. We’ll keep giving you stuff if you keep watching it. Deal? Good.

Til next time,

Matt, Scott and Adam
